Piers Morgan caught Covid at Euro 2020 final despite being double-jabbed

Piers Morgan has revealed that he caught Covid at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium.

The former Good Morning Britain host, 56, believes he caught the virus after crowds of ticketless fans swarmed the venue.

Piers has had both doses of theAstraZeneca vaccine, but began to have symptoms two days after the game, which included a raging fever, chills and violent coughing and sneezing fits.

He said it was the "roughest I've felt" from an illness in his adult life.

Piers said he believes he caught the Delta coronavirus variant a fortnight ago at the final, which saw Italy beat the England squad after the game went to penalties.

"My confidence that the event would be 'covid safe' had disintegrated," Piers said. "It was turning into an unregulated free-for-all."

After he began experiencing symptoms, Piers took a lateral flow test that came back positive and a PCR test confirmed the result.

He suffered fever, cold sweats, coughing, sneezing and "strange aches".

Piers has now recovered from his symptoms, but he says his voice has a low pitch.

He told the Mail on Sunday: "My voice now sounds like Barry White, though I couldn't feel less like a Walrus of Love."

Piers added: "This is definitely the roughest I've felt from any illness in my adult life, BUT, as I slowly come out the other side, coughing and spluttering."

"I'm still here – unlike so many millions around the world who've lost their lives to Covid in this pandemic.

"For that, I owe a heartfelt debt of thanks to the brilliant scientists up in Oxford who created the Astra-Zeneca vaccine with such astonishing speed."

The AstraZeneca vaccine has been found to be around 70% effective at stopping transmission of Covid.

It is between 60-73% effective at stopping symptoms and 80% effective at stopping severe illness from Covid.

Piers had shared pictures of himself in the crowd watching the game with his sons.

Later, he shared a video of himself in the stadium with comedian Jack Whitehall.

He was also seen posing for photos with football fans who asked him for a snap.

Officials had assured fans attending the final that only fully-vaccinated spectators, or those who had negative tests, would be allowed into the stadium.

Throughout the pandemic, Piers had been one of the government's most vocal critics while he was on Good Morning Britain.

He had hit out at ministers for refusing to appear on GMB for 201 days, a run that was finally broken when then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock appeared on the show in November.

Earlier this week, Piers hit out at people who refuse to get the vaccine, calling "deluded ignorant morons".

Piers tweeted: "People have the right to not get vaccinated against covid.

"Just as I have the right to think they're selfish, deluded ignorant morons who will keep this pandemic going much longer than it should."
