Piers Morgan cancels his own press award nomination in a fit of pique after GMB exit

Piers Morgan has said he's pre-empting his biggest critics - by "cancelling" himself.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter had been nominated for the Columnist of the Year Award, but has now withdrawn his candidacy.

Piers claimed he'd made the decision after predicting that "some deranged wokie" would try to "cancel" him, so denied them the opportunity.

"I've been nominated in @EditorsUK awards as Columnist of the Year," he tweeted, alongside a screengrab of the other nominees.

"Obviously, some deranged wokie is now going to make a fuss about this & demand I be cancelled from the shortlist, to make a name for themselves.

"So before they do, I am cancelling myself. Remove my nomination."

This comes after Piers' sudden exit from GMB hosting duties after six years.

His comments about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey sparked a sizeable backlash, and prompted more than 40,000 complaints to be logged with broadcast watchdog Ofcom.

Piers' final show on Tuesday proved a historic moment for GMB as it overtook its BBC breakfast show rival in viewing figures.

But it also saw him storm off-set in a huff after a heated clash with Alex Beresford over his "diabolical behaviour."

That evening ITV confirmed he would no longer be presenting the show.

And the following morning, Piers told reporters that his split from the broadcaster had been "amicable."

He added: "I'm just going to take it easy and see how we go.

"I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that's entirely their right.

"I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.

"If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.

"I think it's fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they've cancelled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge.

"I would call it a temporary hibernation."
