Piers Morgan calls for Mikel Arteta's head in withering put-down after "humiliating" Arsenal defeat

Piers Morgan does not believe Mikel Arteta should continue as Arsenal ’s manager following Thursday’s Europa League exit.

The Gunners put in a tame performance in the second leg of their semi-final tie against Villarreal to condemn them to a 2-1 aggregate loss.

Not only does that result mean that Arteta’s side are destined to end the season trophyless but they are also set to miss out on qualification for European football for the first time in 26 years.

The North London side are languishing in ninth in the standings and could feasibly even miss out on a place in the top half, with Aston Villa just one point behind with a game in hand with Leeds United only one point further back.

It has been a miserable campaign for Arsenal domestically with the European run providing light relief, but now that it has ended - the pressure is mounting on Arteta.

Despite the arrivals of Gabriel, Willian and Thomas Partey last summer - alongside the loan signing of Martin Odegaard in January - neither the results nor style of play have improved.

Now, the former Good Morning Britain host and Gunners fan Morgan has called the campaign a ‘disaster’ with the team playing ‘dreadful football’, while also highlighting the irony of Arteta’s season being ended by his predecessor Unai Emery.

The Villarreal boss is aiming to win his fourth Europa League title while it will be his fifth final in the competition since 2014, having also guided Arsenal to the showpiece two years ago.

Upon the full-time whistle, Morgan wrote: "Utter crap. #arsenal", before adding in a follow-up tweet: "Why does Mikel Arteta deserve to continue as manager?

"This season has been a total disaster, we’re playing dreadful football, and we just got kicked out of Europe by the guy he replaced. Humiliating. #afc."
