Piers Morgan breaks silence over 'friend' Kay Burley breaking coronavirus rules

Piers Morgan finally addressed his "friend" Kay Burley breaking coronavirus rules on Good Morning Britain today.

Sky News presenter Kay has reportedly been taken off air until 2021 after breaking lockdown rules on her 60th birthday bash.

Kay apologised after "inadvertently breaking the rules" when she hosted a party and used the toilet in a different restuarant.

Speaking about the news on GMB today, Piers admitted that viewers were right to question why they had not yet spoken about the controversy.

Piers Morgan finally addressed the controversy on GMB (ITV)

He said: "I want to start with this - these are people we know, friends of ours, they're caught up in a story. And I think it's only reasonable that we should at least mention this, that over at Sky News Kay Burley, the morning show anchor, and Beth Rigby, the political editor, and various other members of the Sky News team, they have all been accused - it has been reported and hasn't been denied - that they broke the lockdown rules to celebrate Kay's 60th birthday.

"She's now been taken off air for an indeterminate amount of time. We're getting, rightly, asked why we're not commenting on this when it's one of our own, one of the media. Or do the rules not apply in reporting these things?"

Susanna Reid interjected: "We're pretty tough on the politicians!"

"We should talk about this, even if they are friends of ours," Piers continued. "My view would be - and I'm sure Kay's view would be if she was talking about this, which she isn't at the moment - is that we should be held to account, in my opinion.

"In exactly the way that we hold politicians to account because if we're going to hold people's feet to the fire, we've got to make sure that we live up to the same standards."

Yet, GMB viewers were not too happy about Piers' response, with one tweeting: "Was that your best effort to hold a "friend" to account compared to politicians ? #GMB."

While another commented: "I see @piersmorgan tone is much different discussing #KayBurley actions than it was the politicians! Now he’s saying that we all make ‘mistakes’ #gmb - @susannareid100 ‘that picture wasn’t taken at the time’ AGAIN wouldn’t have said that if it was a politician! #Hypocrite."

A third fumed: "Piers Morgan holding Kay Burley to account like a toddler who’d taken an extra chocolate: It’s ok when you’re all mates. #GMB."
