Piers Morgan has branded himself a 'Covidiot' and admitted he's 'guilty as charged' after a rule breach in a London taxi.
On Sunday morning, photos of the Good Morning Britain host were published by The Sun, showing him in the back of a cab without wearing a face mask, going against a rule that has been in place for months now, with guidelines on the Government website reading: "You must wear a face covering when using taxis or private hire vehicles."
The paper reports that Piers had just left Harry's Bar in the capital alongside wife Celia, but, while she wore a covering, Piers did not, with his error captured by waiting paparazzi photographers at the scene.
Addressing the story of his rule break head on, Piers, who has berated many people for not following the rules during the coronavirus pandemic, tweeted The Sun's story and posted: "I put my mask on seconds after this pic was taken, as the cab moved off. I should have done it before I got in but ironically, I was chatting to the paparazzi & I forgot."
He then added: "I did breach covid rules for a few seconds by forgetting to put my mask on before I got in the cab. Fortunately, I remembered as we pulled away & put it on.
"Masks help save lives, so it's very important we all remember to wear them when we should."
After a follower told him there was 'no excuse' for his error, Piers responded: "I haven't made an excuse, I just explained what happened. I'm guilty as charged.
"For a few seconds, I was a Covidiot & I deserve the full wrath of Twitter hell to now descend on me."
Twitter users, as you'd expect, were quick to react to news of Piers' actions, with one challenging his critics by replying: "Everyone forgets at some point. I challenge every single person to say hand on heart that at some point they haven’t said ‘oh my mask!’ Stop being ridiculous people!"
In agreement, another tweeted: "If I had £1 for every time I went to go into a shop and had left my mask in the car I’d be as rich as piers . We all make mistakes."
However others weren't quite so forgiving. One blasted: "he should practice what he preaches," and another commenting: "Ok, I believe you that you honestly forgot.
"The problem is, is if anyone else pictured in the same situation giving the same excuse you would slaughter them and want them sacked."
