Piers Morgan brands BAFTAs 'unwatchable' with limited audience and handful of guests

Piers Morgan has slammed this year's BAFTA Television Awards as "unwatchable".

The journalist and television presenter has never been shy of giving his honest opinion on things and it was no different as he gave his verdict on the annual award show, which took place on Sunday night.

Piers was full of criticism for the event, which was broadcasted live from the BBC's Television Centre in west London with a limited live audience and only a handful of the night's nominees due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"This #BAFTAs is unwatchable, like every other awards show since the pandemic started," he wrote on Twitter.

Richard Ayoade even made fun of the sparse audience during his presenting stint.

"In just two weeks, the national lockdown may be lifted, but why wait until then to have this show? I like things with no atmosphere," he told the small audience at one point.

When they responded to his joke, he quipped back: "Thank you, it's good to wait three minutes to show any signs of appreciation."

Fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment at the programme.

One wrote: "Oh it's dire, flat absolutely no excitement or atmosphere."

"Yep, boring, awkward, no atmosphere. Everyone is blatantly pissed off that things aren’t back to normal ... and rightly so. Feels like another world ... it’s time this s**t was over," another added.

Others found different ways to pass the time, with one writing: "Occasionally I agree 100% with you - uncomfortable to watch - just switched off and out to water the garden."

It was a good night for Michaela Coel, who won a string of awards for her show I May Destroy You (Scott Garfitt/REX/Shutterstock for BAFTA)

The BAFTA Television Awards saw Michaela Coel win big, including a Leading Actress gong for her show, I May Destroy You.

"Thank you BAFTA and thank you to the jury for selecting me as your winner today.

"A huge shoutout to Billie [Piper], Daisy [Edgar-Jones], Hayley [Squires] , Jodie [Comer] and Letitia [Wright] because you guys are literally sick.

"Also, I shouldn't really say it but I wrote my words and I know that your talent to take words that a writer has written and make it sound like your own is unbelievable and I really hope I get to work with each of you one day," she said in her acceptance speech.

Other winners included Normal People's Paul Mescal, who took home the Leading Actor prize.

Diversity also won Must-See Moment for their Black Lives Matter inspired routine on Britain's Got Talent.
