Piers Morgan branded hypocrite as he says goodbye to 'surreal' Britain

Piers Morgan has jetted off on holiday to escape 'surreal' Britain as he takes an extended break from his Good Morning Britain duties.

It was confirmed this week that Piers and co-host Susanna Reid would be taking some time off the show for summer, with Piers even hinting that he could leave GMB next year.

But for now he's looking forward to a relaxing holiday, telling viewers, before signing off on Wednesday: "This is our last programme until September. We're going to lie in sunshine."

And on Sunday, Piers shared a selfie of him on a plane, wearing a mask, ready to jet off to sunnier climes, which he captioned: "I’m a washed up, knackered, pathetic excuse for a celebrity - get me outta here. Bye Britain, it’s been... surreal."

Piers has been a busy man during lockdown, barely being off screen from Good Morning, apart from when he was tested for coronavirus, and has racked up thousands of complaints to Ofcom from viewers angry at the way he's handled some interviews, including ones with Government ministers, who have since boycotted the show, and rapper Dizzee Rascal.

His millions of Twitter followers were quick to react to his photo, with many branding him a 'hypocrite' after he has previously hit out at people for flouting social distancing.

One responded: "What a hypocrite lecturing everyone else of social distance and crowds and the virus numbers then getting on a plane," and another tweeting: "Now can you imagine if someone in the GOV took this picture going on a plane... you’d be having a tantrum piers."

However, others defend him, with one reacting: "Wake up. It is permitted now social distancing and wearing a mask."
