Piers Morgan brags about breaking GMB ratings record with his return to show

Piers Morgan is pretty chuffed with himself after his return to Good Morning Britain on Monday was the highest-rating episode in the show's history.

The outspoken broadcaster, 55, returned to the ITV morning show yesterday after being forced to ditch his hosting duties after revealing that he was suffering mild coronavirus symptoms.

He shared on Twitter last Sunday night that he was tested for the deadly bug and was awaiting the results.

The next day he confirmed that he was not suffering from Covid-19 but he was not going to return to work until his doctor gave him the go ahead.

Piers' return to the small screen earlier this week seemed to be a hit with TV viewers as the former newspaper editor managed to pull in a large audience - which broke GMB records.

Boasting about his return bringing in the numbers, controversial Piers took to Twitter and Instagram, on Tuesday, to show-off as he typed: "BREAKING: Yesterday's @GMB was the highest-rated programme in our show's history.

"26.5% audience share & 48% more viewers than same day last year, with a 32%, 1.8m peak. Oh, and no Govt ministers. Thanks for watching. We'll keep pounding."

Last Sunday, Piers told fans he'd have to take a step back from GMB after suffering mild symptoms and was awaiting the result of a test.

He tweeted: "UPDATE: On medical advice, and out of an abundance of caution for a mild symptom that arose in past 48hrs...

"I've had a test for COVID-19 and so won’t be working on @GMB until I get the result back, which should be tomorrow."

Piers didn't go into what symptoms he had experienced, but did reveal he was going by medical advice.

The next day Monday Piers told his fans that he was not infected with the virus.

Speaking to his Twitter followers, he said: "UPDATE: My COVID-19 test was negative.

"I was advised to take the test by my doctor after developing possible coronavirus symptoms, and was entitled to do so as a Govt-designated essential worker.

"I'll be back on @GMB as soon as my doctor advises I'm OK to return to work."

On Thursday he announced that he was preparing to return to the show this Monday after fans quizzed him online.

He tweeted on Thursday: "Relax everyone, I’ll be back Monday."

Piers was replaced by ITV favourite Ben Shephard during his absence - who held down the fort with Susanna Reid.
