Piers Morgan blasts 'homophobic' ex-minister who says same-sex dancing should be post-watershed

Piers Morgan was praised by Good Morning Britain viewers today for "laying into" ex-DUP minister Jim Wells after he suggested that same-sex dancing on Strictly should be after the watershed.

The politician, 62, recently said that he would not watch Strictly any more because of the potential inclusion of same-sex couples next year.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain today alongside former professional Robin Windsor, Wells was probed about the remarks he had made.

"It's family viewing," he told hosts Piers and Susanna Reid. "The last thing you need to be is challenged."

After suggesting that same-sex dancing would cause children to "ask questions", Piers questioned him on what he thought they'd asked.

The minister stumbled, but replied: "Why are there two men or women dancing?"

He then referred to the move as "radical", prompting Piers to say: "What time of day do you think gay people should be on TV?"

Wells suggested that it was OK so long as they weren't "branded as gay" and said that Strictly should air after the watershed if there are same-sex couples involved.

Piers continued to ask what was the "closest" he'd danced to another man, which Wells struggled to answer.

"You're just an old bigoted dinosaur," Piers retorted and pointed out that he was sitting next to a gay man and quipped: "Your body is immediately defensive."

Later, Wells began to grow visibly angry towards Piers, saying: "You've insulted me for the last five minutes."

But Piers responded: "I'm not insulting you, I'm insulting your bigotry."

GMB then had two same-sex couples dance in front of him in the studio and Wells looked incredibly uncomfortable.

And viewers flocked to Twitter to praise Piers.

One tweeted: "Piers Morgan what a man!! He roasted Jim this morning about same sex couples dancing together. DO WHAT YOU WANT WHEN YOU WANT AND DANCE WITH WHOEVER YOU WANT TO #gmb @GMB."

While another commented: "For once I like Piers Morgan.. Once #gmb."

A third remarked: "Don't normally like Piers Morgan but enjoying this grilling of the big homophobe this morning #gmb."

"I don’t like Piers Morgan at the best of times, but him going in on a homophobe on #GMB makes me very happy," another wrote.

One commented: "Go on Piers... Take him down #GMB."

Another wrote: "@piersmorgan take him down Piers. Don’t allow this idiot to get away with his bigoted views. What an absolute moron #GMB."
