Piers Morgan has called Donald Trump “appalling” after the president falsely claimed victory and suggested asking the Supreme Court to halt all vote-counting.
Trump’s comments come after his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, told his supporters he is “on track” to become the new president.
“Millions of people voted for us tonight,” Trump said from the White House. “A very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise that group of people – frankly, we did win this election.”
He continued: “We want the law to be used in a proper manner, so we’ll be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them finding any ballots at four in the morning and adding them to the list.”
The president has been heavily criticised for his remarks.
Morgan, who once supported Trump, called the president’s “demand” to deny “millions of Americans” their votes “an unprecedented assault on American democracy”.
He added: “It's an absolute disgrace.”
Frozen star Josh Gad shared Morgan's post, writing: “These are his allies saying this. Think about that.”
Both Trump and Biden have won key states in what has become a tighter election race than polls had suggested.
However, Biden is strongly expected to secure more states once the mail-in votes have been counted.
Legal and political analysts have said that Trump might not have the legal ground to stop all vote-counting considering he questioned the validity of votes in conjunction with his apparent success.
