Piers Morgan has appealed to fans for support to combat Ofcom complaints he ‘bullied’ an MP, over the Government's shortcomings in supplying PPE to NHS heroes fighting coronavirus.
The 55-year-old Good Morning Britain host grilled Helen Whately, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care, when she appeared on the show last week.
Piers took the MP to task for over the Government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the struggle to supply life-saving Personal Protection Equipment to medical workers.
While many supported his level of scrutiny, the host’s heated line of questioning sparked thousands of complaints to television watchdog Ofcom. Piers though, isn’t taking the complaints lying down.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the host wrote: ”Apparently nearly 2000 people have now complained to @Ofcom about me grilling Care minister Helen Whateley too 'unfairly' when she couldn't answer even basic questions.”
He added: ”If you think I should continue grilling ministers in the way I've been doing, please tell @OFCOM. Thanks."
Ofcom confirmed to The Sun that they had received 1,910 complaints following the the Conservative MP for Faversham and Mid Kent’s appearance on the morning news show last week.
The regulator is quoted as stating: "We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."
Debate became heated when Piers accused Ms Whately of laughing while they were discussing the death rate of coronavirus patients in the UK.
He also challenged her on a different between the number of medical practitioners that had died of the COVID-19 virus as reported in the press compared with official government numbers.
Fans have flooded to Pier’s defence, with one follower responding on Twitter to say: “Keep it going mate! You are just spilling the truth! Keep them on the edge, you have the whole country behind you.”
However others have suggested Piers may have gone too far.
One responded: “You blur the lines between robustly holding govt to account & disrespecting those democratically elected to represent us. Apologise.”
