Piers Morgan asks bizarre Jurgen Klopp question and hits out at Liverpool furlough decision

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has hit out at Liverpool after the club decided to furlough staff using the government's 80% pay scheme.

The Reds promised that all staff being temporarily put on furlough would remain on 100% of their wage with the club paying the remaining 20%.

Good Morning Britain host Morgan tweeted about the news, stating: "Shameful.

"You’re owned by American billionaires @LFC - you should not be using British taxpayer money like this. Has Jurgen Klopp agreed to this?"

Liverpool manager Klopp is currently in negotiations to have his pay cut significantly, as are the players and senior staff.

The German is not the owner of the football club and, as per Morgan's statement, is not likely to have been privy to conversations making decisions of this nature.

Liverpool had already announced last month they were paying the matchday and non-matchday staff for the remaining postponed four home Premier League games this season, an amount which is believed to total £1million.

And the Reds issued an update today detailing how they are dealing with the ongoing pandemic, which has seen the Premier League suspended indefinitely having initially been put on hold on March 13.

They confirmed further action was taken with around a half of the club's staff being furloughed under the government furlough scheme. They will receive 80% of their wage from the government - up to a maximum of £2,500 per month - with Liverpool topping up the rest.

The statement, released on Saturday afternoon, also welcomed the Premier League's commitment to resume the current season when it is safe to do so, with Klopp's side a record 25 points clear at the summit.
