Piers Morgan announces extended summer break from Good Morning Britain

Controversial Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has announced he will be taking an "extended break" from the breakfast show.

Piers announced the news during Monday morning's instalment of the show and said it impacts himself and his co-host of five years, Susanna Reid.

The duo will be absent from the ITV1 programme for the summer with Piers telling viewers that he will be jetting off - as shown in the video above.

The pair confirmed they will be speaking to their colleague Kate Garraway on Wednesday July 8 before the go off for their summer break.

Piers told viewers: "We're going to talk to Kate on Wednesday before we go off for the summer.

"She's going to have something more to say about this but it's certainly premature at the moment to think that Derek isn't in any way out of the woods, sadly, on this and he remains in a very serious critical condition."

The last time the pair took a break from our screens was for a week at the end of May, during what should have been school half term.

Piers and Susanna have presented GMB together for the past five year after Piers guest-hosted the ITV show for five episodes in April 2015 and became a permanent fixture alongside Susanna Reid and Charlotte Hawkins.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 from 6am.
