Pierre van Hooijdonk insists Celtic can never become a 'bigger team' unless they move to English league

Former Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk insists the Hoops can never grow unless they move down to the English leagues.

The Dutchman enjoyed a successful spell with the club back in 1995-97 and became a fans favourite during helping them secure their first trophy in six years.

Van Hooijdonk, speaking in an interview with RT, said for Celtic to go to the next level they must move away from the Scottish Premiership to England.

And he reckons if they started in the Championship, then within a period of four years they would be challenging for the Premier League title.

But for now, he said Neil Lennon 's side are more than capable of securing a treble and going for 10-in-a-row.

He said: "They can still win the treble again. Of course in Europe, they are always looking for success, but they have one big problem.

Jeremy Toljan compares Celtic support to Borussia Dortmund fanatics as he opens up on future

"They are still part of the Scottish league and as long as they are, they can never become a bigger club.

"In all aspects, they are a club, if they go to the Championship in England to start, in four years time they will be playing for the Premier League title, because then they can afford to buy the best players.

"We are waiting for Celtic to win the 10-in-a-row, because that is the main target."
