Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set for Everton transfer after 'agreeing personal terms'

Everton are on the verge of signing Southampton's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after the midfielder agreed personal terms.

A report from the Southern Daily Echo states that both clubs have also agreed on a £25million fee.

Hojbjerg was expected to leave St Mary's this summer for a new challenge having been transfer listed by his club in recent weeks.

The 24-year-old was forthcoming with his ambitions to play at a "higher level" and will now become Carlo Ancelotti's first signing at Goodison Park.

Southampton had already stripped Hojbjerg of the club captaincy following his comments, and now cash-in on the player, who had just a year remaining on his contract.

It took three bids from Everton to finally reach a deal with Southampton though, who rejected initial offers of £18m and £20m before settling on £25m.

Given the current economic climate, Southampton have done well to receive such a considerable figure for a player who will be a free agent in under a year's time.

Hojbjerg has been a regular performer since moving to the club in 2016 from Bayern Munich, but had begun to seek pastures new.

He said last month: "I know what I want, the club knows it too. I want to play at an even higher level than I am currently.

"The relationship between me and Southampton is fantastic. The club gave me the platform to grow.

"I’m not saying ‘Goodbye’ and I’m focused on my club, but my goal is very clear: I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League."

Even so, Southampton are currently one place behind Everton in the table and tied on points.

Tottenham were also in the frame for his signature, and were believed to be leading the race.

However Spurs seem unwilling to match Everton's offer and Hojbjerg will now complete his switch to Merseyside, subject to him passing a medical.

Saints' boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will no doubt rue the loss of a player of Hojbjerg's stature, but can use the funds to further invest in his own squad.

Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu is already expected to join in a £10.9million deal after Southampton activated his release clause and agreed a four-year deal.
