Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slammed for 'schoolboy' error in Arsenal defeat at Aston Villa

Tim Sherwood has slammed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the Arsenal captain was seen laughing and joking with Tyrone Mings in the build-up to Aston Villa's decisive goal on Tuesday night.

The Gunners fell 1-0 behind at Villa Park as a set piece reached Trezeguet at the back post and he fired a vicious shot into the bottom corner.

In the build up to that goal, Aubameyang lost Tyrone Mings as the Villa defender made a run to the front post as the ball was flicked on to Trezeguet.

The Arsenal captain was seen in close-up footage sharing a laugh with Mings and being caught napping as the defender raced ahead of him and he was unable to keep with his man.

And former Aston Villa manager Sherwood has hit out at the striker for his rookie defending.

"This is typical of Arsenal’s performance," Sherwood told Premier League Productions.

"It’s 'We’ll have a little joke about’ but Mings is more alert, he goes ‘Ta-ta, see you later, I’m going to go near post I’m going to flick this on and you’re going to be 1-0 down.'

"[Aubameyang’s] sleeping. It’s not a game on the park; this is a professional football match where you’ve got a chance to finish in the Europa League spots.

"Your manager [Mikel Arteta] has said it before the game that you need to win two football matches to finish in the Europa League and there’s still a chance of that

"That’s not good enough. That’s just like a schoolboy having a joke with his friend. Mings knew what he was doing because what he was doing was luring him in and then he was gone."

Meanwhile fans accused the forward of being "mugged off" and joked that "Mings made a mockery of him".

Other fans branded his marking "embarrassing" and a "disgrace" as fans of other clubs were quick to mark Arsenal as their hopes of securing European football took a costly dent.
