Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s father reveals delight at Chelsea ‘nightmare’ coming to an end

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended a “nightmare” period at Chelsea by signing for Marseille, according to his father.

The Blues accepted a free transfer for the veteran striker with a year left on his contract having fallen out of favour under successive managers, and with new boss Mauricio Pochettino happy to cut ties.

Aubameyang has moved clubs for the third season in a row but his father, Pierre Aubame, is pleased to see him move on.

In August of last year, the 34-year-old and his family were victims of a terrifying home break-in before his form declined at Chelsea.

“His jaw was broken by robbers at his home in Barcelona while trying to protect his wife and children,” Pierre told L’Equipe. “At Chelsea, he played with a mask at the start.

“It could only be a nightmare year. Now it’s over. He has a smile. He knows that I’m seeing the light again because I can walk and run since my last operation. And he’s signing for [Marseille].

“It is a big relief after the nightmare year that he experienced. There was contact with Saudi Arabia, but when [Marseille] came forward… who hasn’t dreamed of playing for this club? Especially in Africa. I keep receiving messages from back home.”

Aubameyang has signed a three-year deal with Ligue 1 club Marseille after a decade away from French football.
