Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Freddie Ljungberg can give Arsenal something special

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has backed Freddie Ljungberg to give Arsenal "something special" during his spell in charge of the club.

Ljungberg is filling the void left by Unai Emery's sacking on an interim basis whilst Arsenal seek a new head coach. However with the club hierarchy prepared to take their time before appointing a permanent replacement the Swede may find himself in the role for some time, potentially until the end of the season.

Ljungberg's tenure began with a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road where Aubameyang was the saviour, the club captain twice netting equalisers as Arsenal battled to a draw that leaves them as many points off the top four - seven - as they are the relegation zone.

Speaking in his post-match press conference Ljungberg insisted that finishing in the Champions League places is "100%" possible and Aubameyang echoed the optimism of his new head coach.

"He can give us something special," the club captain said. "If I'm not wrong he was part of the Invincibles.

"His career speaks for himself. We will try to follow him and give the best for him."

Aubameyang added: "Everybody is respectful of Freddie. He played for Arsenal, he knows as a player how we feel.

"It's interesting to have him. We had only one session with him, maybe two for those guys who didn't play on Thursday. We will see this week what is going to happen.

"For me personally I think it's good for us. He played for Arsenal and he has this in his heart."

Ljungberg was unable, however, to end the winless streak he inherited from Emery, which now sits at eight games. Indeed Arsenal were perhaps fortunate to avoid defeat at Carrow Road.

Though the visitors dominated possession in the second half and for once this season outshot their opponents they were twice outdone on the counter as first Teemu Pukki and then Todd Cantwell gave Norwich the lead.

Between those two Aubameyang drew Arsenal level after VAR instructed his penalty, initially saved by Tim Krul, be retaken due to the encroachment of Norwich defenders. A brilliant second half volley by the Gabon striker earned Arsenal a draw but when the Canaries found their way through on the counter again it took excellent saves from goalkeeper Bernd Leno to deny them the win.

"We have positive things to take," Aubameyang insisted. "We didn't play bad, we played good.

"We have to maybe be cleverer in the transition, maybe make some fouls. That's part of the game to not concede goals."

Even if it did not bring immediate results decision to sack Emery appears to have at least lightened the increasingly tense mood that had developed around Arsenal in recent weeks. Whilst the Spaniard's grace in the role was much admired he had become an increasingly isolated figure from players and staff in the final months of his tenure as he pored over hours of video in an attempt to find an answer to his side's travails.

Ljungberg has made a conscious effort to inject some lightness into his first 48 hours, reaffirming his faith in the players both publicly and privately.

Aubameyang said: "I think the mood is always good. We tried to find more confidence in winning games. We try our best.

"The mood is ok, it's good. We know it was something special because Unai Emery was sacked, now we have Freddie and we're all focused on one thing, to be back in the winning days.

"Today we did maybe not a perfect game but a good job and we'll try to win the next one."
