Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fails to score again as Nuno gives Mikel Arteta a lesson - Arsenal talking points vs Wolves

Arsenal succumbed to their third home defeat in a row in the Premier League with a 2-1 loss to Wolves on Sunday.

The early part of the game was overshadowed by a nasty-looking head collision between David Luiz and Raul Jimenez which eventually forced both players off the pitch.

However, Wolves reacted better to the unsettling events and took the lead when Pedro Neto hammered home a rebound after Leander Dendoncker's header had hit the bar.

Just three minutes later the Gunners were level thanks to a Gabriel header, but the parity was short lived as Daniel Podence but the visitors back in front with a fantastic finish just before half time.

Mikel Arteta 's side were probably the stronger in the second half, but again rarely looked like causing any actual problems for Rui Patricio in the Wolves goal.

They now sit 14th in the table with their worst Premier League points tally ever after 10 matches.

football.london takes a look at a few of the talking points from another dismal home showing for Arsenal.

Nuno trumps Arteta

Going into the game there was some interest in the formation changes Arsenal and Wolves had gone through in recent weeks.

Both sides had switched from a 3-4-3 to a 4-2-3-1 after the international break, but produced wildly different results.

Nuno Espirito Santo 's side looked more energetic, better drilled and more hungry particularly in the final third where they had a clear plan. As the visitors sat back towards the end of the match it didn't seem clear how Mikel Arteta intended for his side to get back into the game.

A year to the day after Unai Emery was sacked it's interesting to think that the number one favourite to replace him was indeed the Wolves manager.

Mikel Arteta is a bright young coach but he was taught a lesson by his more experienced counterpart.

When Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in his opening two games of the season it seemed as though Arsenal could look forward to another campaign of consistent goal scoring from their star striker.

Unfortunately, it hasn't quite worked out like that. Since then he has only managed one goal in the league which came from the penalty spot at Old Trafford. This means that he is now nine games without scoring from open play in the Premier League.

In each of those matches before Sunday there have been mitigating circumstances to explain the Gabonese forwards lack of form.

He has been out of position on the left wing more or less since Mikel Arteta took over, and when he was moved central for the game against Leeds, Arsenal were reduced to ten men for most of the second period after Nicolas Pepe 's red card.

Today there were no excuses. Aubameyang had good chances to score - particularly from a header inside the penalty box just ten minutes from time - but he failed to take them. It's concerning stuff for the Gunners.

Creativity still missing

The story of Arsenal's season so far has been their inability to create chances. When asked about it in his post-match press conference Mikel Arteta seemed to imply that his side were creating chances but simply lacked the ruthlessness to take them.

"Well today we got into this position much more than Wolves did and we lose 2-1 that’s for sure" he said.

"But the quality as I mentioned before, the efficiency of the delivery, the quality altogether and the final product has to be much more consistent and better and this is the task that we have in front of us."

It did not look that way on the day. Surprisingly Willian looked the most likely to create throughout before he was hooked 25 minutes from time.

His replacement Reiss Nelson did little when he came on, while fellow Hale End graduate Joe Willock was equally non-existent for the full 90 minutes. The decision not to even include Emile Smith Rowe in the squad surely has to be questioned now.

Arsenal need Partey back soon

The absence of Thomas Partey was painfully obvious as Wolves used the athleticism of Adama Traore, Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence to counter on Arsenal at will.

Granit Xhaka 's lack of mobility as a defensive midfielder was hideously exposed particularly after he committed the cardinal sin of getting too tight to Traore in the build up to Wolves' second goal.

Dani Ceballos struggled to reach the heights of his performance at Elland Road and with any quality in the middle of the park Arsenal always looked vulnerable.

The news on the Ghanaian - who has been missing since picking up a thigh strain in the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa at the start of this month - is not good however.

Mikel Arteta confirmed in his post match press conference that Partey's injury is worse than first feared and that the Gunners will be without him for "the next few games."
