Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang explains why he did not fully celebrate his goal against Man United

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed he knew he was onside for Arsenal’s equaliser against Manchester United.

Aubameyang continued his impressive form against the Reds on Monday night, cancelling out Scott McTominay first half opener at Old Trafford.

However, the Gunners frontman had VAR to thank for his goal. After collecting a pass from Bukayo Saka, Aubameyang raced clear before confidently finishing past David de Gea.

But the goal was initially chalked off after the linesman raised his flag for offside. But following a VAR review, referee Kevin Friend overturned the original decision to award the goal.

And speaking afterwards, the Arsenal star spoke on how he knew the goal would be given.

He told Sky Sports: "I took the ball from Bukayo. I was sure I was not offside. I was surprised the referee whistled.

"I always try to score even if there is a whistle from the referee. I heard the crowd saying it was offside but it was a goal so I was happy."

Before the forward opened up on how players can no longer celebrate due the delay VAR brings.

‘Yeah of course. It’s always a bit of a strange feeling," Aubameyang added.

"You cannot celebrate 100% but it’s OK because I am happy at the same time."

Before the Gunners number 14 concluded: "I think the team fought very well today.

"We’ll take a point. It’s always hard to come here so we will take it.

"It’s not easy when you take a goal just before half-time. But we came back in the second half with great spirit. Last week we came back as well. We need to start with confidence."
