Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivers furious eight-word VAR response to Liverpool incident

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang couldn’t hide his anger at VAR after Trent Alexander-Arnold looked to have escaped a red card against Arsenal.

The Liverpool full-back caught Bukayo Saka with a poorly-timed challenge shortly after the break at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night during the Gunners’ 2-1 win.

Replays suggested the England international was luck not to have been shown a red card for the studs-up tackle, with Saka left in agony after being caught high on the leg as he went for the ball.

Alexander-Arnold was instead only shown a yellow card by referee Paul Tierney, although VAR could have intervened to upgrade it to a red.

Instead, it was decided not to review Tierney’s original decision, leaving the Gunners feeling aggrieved.

The hosts were the victim of a decision being overturned by VAR against Leicester just a week ago, when Eddie Nketiah was sent off for a late challenge on James Justin after originally only being shown a yellow card.

A still of Alexander-Arnold’s challenge was shared on Twitter, clearly showing the dangerous nature of the right-back’s tackle, and Aubameyang didn’t hold back in his response.

“WTF didn’t even get VAR on this one,” the Gabon international wrote.

The decision ultimately didn’t prove crucial for the Gunners, who kept their European hopes alive as they beat the newly-crowned Premier League champions in north London.

After Sadio Mane had put Liverpool ahead, Arsenal were gifted both of their goals as first Virgil van Dijk was caught in possession by Reiss Nelson, who set up Alexandre Lacazette to level.

Lacazette then turned provider as he pounced on a mistake from goalkeeper Alisson, before finding Nelson for his first Premier League goal to get the Gunners back to winning ways ahead of their FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City on Saturday.
