Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contract 'not on the table' as Arsenal face tough call

Arsenal are reportedly yet to offer a new deal to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the club captain's contract at the Emirates Stadium continues to tick down.

Aubameyang has just one year left on his current deal in north London, after which he will be able to walk away from the club on a free transfer.

The Gunners are facing a dilemma over whether or not to look to offload the forward for a fee this summer, or allow him to stay and then see him leave for nothing in a year's time.

The ongoing coronavirus crisis has also made life trickier for the Gunners, with a shrunken transfer market meaning that any fee they could have sought for Aubameyang, who will be 31 this month, will already have diminished somewhat due to the financial hit caused by the pandemic.

It had been reported that the club had offered the forward an extension to his current deal, but ESPN claim that no such offer has been made as the club and their captain remain at an impasse.

Aubameyang has never played in the Champions League for the Gunners, and many feel that in order to convince him to stay for another season then the club will need to earn a place back amongst the elite of European football.

That is still possible in the current campaign, but Mikel Arteta's side will resume the current season sitting down in ninth place and eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who are said to be monitoring Aubameyang's situation.

It could be that fifth place in the Premier League earns a place in next season's Champions League due to Manchester City's looming European ban.

Manchester United currently sit fifth, five points clear of Arsenal having played a game more.
