Chris Sutton believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be waiting to discover Arsenal's transfer plans before signing a new contract.
The Gunners have made two summer additions with Willian arriving on a free transfer from Chelsea.
Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes has also joined to bolster Mikel Arteta's backline significantly.
The Arsenal boss reiterated he remains hopeful Aubameyang will sign fresh terms, with his current deal set to expire next summer.
The Gunners boss echoed that same sentiment after the FA Cup final but there has yet to be any clear movement to suggest a new deal is imminent.
With that in mind, Sutton has questioned whether Aubameyang is waiting to make a decision based on the club's transfer activity or whether he is just waiting for a big European club to swoop.
Sutton said during the Community Shield clash against Liverpool last weekend: "Why the wait though, is it because he's waiting to see what other signings Arsenal make?
"Or is he just keeping his options open and waiting to see if any of the big guns across Europe are in for him?"
With Arteta keen to continue his redevelopment of Arsenal's squad and philosophy, the boss will have been delighted to see the Gunners open the scoring against Liverpool with a move that started inside their own box.
Aubameyang was typically the man to lash the ball home, cutting inside from the left to bend Arsenal ahead.
The Gabon international's work rate also caught the eye, a key component to Arteta's style of play, according to Sutton.
"That's the difference under Mikel Arteta, if you don't run, you don't play," he said.
"There's the star man, Aubameyang, tracking back."
