Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang closes in on Robin van Persie's record ahead of Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Arsenal have endured a tough start to the 2021/22 season.

Mikel Arteta's men currently sit in 12th place in the Premier League table, having accumulated just 11 points from their opening eight league fixtures.

The Gunners started off the campaign in the worst possible circumstances, losing all of their first three league games, failing to score a single goal in the process.

However, the north Londoners have since steadied the ship, winning three games on the bounce before drawing 0-0 against Brighton and 2-2 against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring against Palace, his third league goal of the season, helping him near a record currently held by former Arsenal star Robin van Persie.

van Persie notched 46 Premier League goals at the Emirates Stadium during his tenure in north London, with Aubameyang's effort against the Eagles meaning he has now bagged 42 times in the league at the famous stadium.

The Gabon international endured a difficult time in front of goal last term, finding the back of the net on just 14 occasions in all competitions, 15 less than he managed over the course of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, Aubameyang has already scored six goals across all competitions this season, finding more joy when deployed as a lone centre-forward instead of when he was previously utilised as a left-winger.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand claimed last month that getting the 32-year-old into form will be the best way for Arsenal to enjoy a productive season.

“The biggest thing for you guys is that Aubameyang scored, your talisman, if he plays well and scored goals Arsenal will jump up the league", Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.

"Since he signed his new deal he’s struggled for form, he’s struggled for goals. He’s got that goal now, so let’s see you boys start motoring. Because as much as we take the mick out of you, I do like to see Arsenal do well, I’ve got to be honest.”
