Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang breaks silence after Arsenal axe for 'disciplinary' reason

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has posted on Instagram congratulating his Arsenal teammates for their win against Tottenham despite being dropped to the bench for the encounter.

Aubameyang lost his place in the starting line-up for a 'disciplinary' matter, and it is believed it is due to the fact the 31-year-old arrived late for a team meeting earlier in the day.

In the end the Gunners didn't need him, however, and beat their North London rivals 2-1 with Aubameyang remaining an unused substitute.

And on Sunday evening the striker took to social media to rub it in the noses of Spurs, posting a picture of the team celebrating Alexandre Lacazette's second-half penalty along with the caption: "North London is Red and that's it!!!"

It remains to be seen if Aubameyang returns for the second leg of Arsenal's Europa League last-16 tie against Olympiacos on Thursday.

But Gunners legend Lee Dixon took to Twitter to state his belief that Mikel Arteta made the correct decision to leave the star out of the team.

"Arteta was right to drop Aub in my book. Regardless of the result," he wrote.

"The integrity of the team and its values have to be maintained. No one [is] bigger than the group. It has to be that way IMO Arsenal."

Arteta, meanwhile, said after the game: "We have a way of living together, we have to respect each other and that's it.

"But he's an incredible guy and he's one of the most important players in the team, he's the captain and these things happen in football.

"There's a lot of things happening in our lives, people finding it hard to handle the restrictions and it's part of our job.'

"I will never tell anything what happens in the dressing room."

Arsenal's win saw them remain in tenth place in the Premier League, but they are now just five points behind sixth-placed Everton as they look to avoid failing to qualify for European football for the first time in 25 years.
