Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang backed to join Newcastle United by former Arsenal winger

Former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be open to a move to Newcastle United this month.

The Magpies have been linked with a loan-to-buy move for Aubameyang as they look to recruit a striker to fill the void left by the injured Callum Wilson.

Newcastle may have bide their time in their pursuit of the former Borussia Dortmund striker, as he has just jetted off to represent Gabon in the African Cup of Nations.

Aubameyang has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy in recent weeks and has also been frozen out by Mikel Arteta, with his last appearance for the Gunners coming on December 6.

It remains to be seen whether there is a way back for the 32-year-old at the Emirates, who have been in excellent form since his exile from the squad.

And given his lack of game time in recent weeks, Pennant thinks that a deal for Aubameyang is plausible for Newcastle, who would be able to offer him regular football.

Via quotes from the Metro, he said: “As a professional footballer, it doesn’t matter, you want to play football.

“And if it is not happening at Arsenal, he won’t want to sit there on the weekend watching his teammates play while he is sat at home, he will want to play football.

“He’s a great player and he will want to showcase that. It could be chance to get another big move off the back of that.

“Getting stripped of a captaincy, there is not really much coming back from that. We know he is not going to be a starter, we know he’s not going to get much game time.

“There is every chance this Newcastle deal could come off for sure.”
