Arsenal legend Ian Wright paid an emotional tribute to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Tuesday as the club captain announced he had extended his contract with the north London side.

Arsenal streamed the Gabon forward’s announcement live from the Emirates Stadium as Aubameyang finally revealed he had signed a new deal to keep him with the Gunners until 2023.

And as the stream aired, Ian Wright video-called the 31-year-old.

“I love you man,” Wright said. “Can I just say, because there’s so many people [watching] and I’m sure there’s lots of people requesting you, man, but let me just say: For you to sign for us in a time when we need you most, when we’ve seen legends leave us when we need them, you are legendary status.

“Thank you for life. I love you captain, I love you Auba!

“I’m gonna try to come and see you later – I’m gonna to do some stuff here, I’ll see you later, man. Speak to the fans who love you.”

Aubameyang could not hide his delight at hearing from the former Arsenal and England striker, saying: “I love you, too! I love you, too.

“Thank you very much, thank you very much, legend. I’m happy to see you! Everyone’s happy, we are happy.

“Hopefully we can celebrate this as soon as possible. I really appreciate it, see you later!”

After Wright left the call, Aubameyang addressed Arsenal fans, saying: “Crazy, got a call from Wrighty… I’m so pleased and so honoured to have him joining live with us. That’s a great day, that’s a great day.”

Aubameyang joined Arsenal in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund, and has since scored 72 goals in 111 games.

Crucially, he netted a brace as the Gunners beat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final in August, having also scored twice in the 2-0 semi-final win over holders Manchester City.

The victory over Chelsea marked the first trophy Aubameyang had lifted at Arsenal, and a matter of weeks later he scored at Wembley yet again as the north London team drew 1-1 with Liverpool in the Community Shield before beating the Premier League champions on penalties – with the Gunners’ captain also scoring from the spot in the shootout.

Aubameyang’s new three-year deal with Arsenal is believed to be worth around £250,000 per week.
