The subject of VAR is continuing to cause controversy after the latest incident involving Liverpool.
The Reds thought they had a legitimate goal against Aston Villa when Roberto Firmino poked the ball into the net, only for it to be ruled out for offside in the build-up.
It was not the first time that Jurgen Klopp and his players felt aggrieved by a disallowed goal, and pretty much every other Premier League club could pick out instances this season where they would feel the same.
Diogo Jota was adjudged to have been marginally offside, but the goal was originally allowed to stand with the assistant referee’s flag staying down.
However, it took a good few minutes for a decision to be reached to disallow the goal, and even after the decision there was still plenty of debate over whether the right decision was reached.
Former professional referee Pierluigi Collina, who is now the chairman of the FIFA referees committee, has spoken about VAR’s use in marginal decisions in the past.
Collina argued that if a decision is still not clear or obvious that the on-field call should not be overturned.
"If the images are not conclusive, then the field decision cannot be overruled,” Collina is quoted telling ESPN.
“So it is important that what is shown offers something conclusive.
“Otherwise, I would say, in case of doubt, follow the field decision."
