Pierce Brosnan says women should have shot at James Bond role and men should 'get out of way'

Women should have their shot at the role of James Bond, according to an actor who previously played the superspy.

Navan heartthrob Pierce Brosnan has called for men to “get out of the way” so a lady can play the part after current Bond Daniel Craig steps aside.

The 66-year-old Irishman said: "I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years, get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there.

“I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.”

But Brosnan said with Barbara Broccoli currently on producer duties, it was unlikely to happen just yet.

He said in an interview at Deauville Film Festival: “I don’t think that’s going to happen with the Broccolis. I don’t think that is going to happen under their watch.

“The #MeToo movement has been relevant and significant and well needed in our society, so they’ll have to address that.”

In July, it emerged that actress Lashana Lynch would undertake the iconic role of agent 007 in the 25th Bond movie.

The major shake up will still see Daniel Craig play the titular role but Lynch (who played Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel) will be agent 007.

However, the decision still has to be made about who will take over from Craig for Bond 26.
