Picturesque town named the best in Wales and one of the best in the UK

Hay-on-Wye has been named the best town in Wales and one of the best in the UK, according to Which?

Their research concluded that the Powys market town near the English border came out top when ranking towns and villages in Wales.

What members of the consumer group thought about the area was taken into account for the scoring system, along with its tourist attractions and nearby places, WalesOnline reports.

A spokesperson for Which? said: "The small market town, on the border between England and Wales, received four stars for scenery, attractiveness, and peace and quiet.

"It’s often described as 'the town of books', with more than 20 bookshops and hosts the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts.

"It also boasts beautiful scenery and great walks, with the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, the winding River Wye, and many surrounding lakes and forests for visitors to enjoy."

Hay-on-Wye is one of the biggest names in the literary world thanks to its festival.

Often described as a 'bibliophile's dream', every nook and cranny in the town is crammed with second hand book shops.

But if literature isn't your thing, there's still plenty to do in the town with beautiful scenery to gaze over and walks along the river.

There's also an array of olde-worlde pubs and restaurants, and a diverse range of shops and crafts.

The official score received by Hay-on-Wye in the survey was 84 per cent.

Meanwhile, the highest-ranking town in the UK was Avebury in Wiltshire, which received a destination score of 90 per cent, due to its stone circle, Neolithic sites, and quaint village pubs.

Also scoring highly was Castle Combe, also in Wiltshire, and Wells in Somerset, which came in joint second place.

Grasmere was named the best town in Cumbria, Saltaire in West Yorkshire, Castleton in Derbyshire, and Aberfeldy was crowned the best town in Scotland.

Rory Bolan, Which? Travel Editor, said: "The UK is full of towns and villages bursting with character and history, many of which are relatively quiet and unspoilt making them perfect destinations for a day trip or a holiday.

"Whether you’re looking for somewhere with peaceful walks and bracing scenery, or simply a selection of independent shops and cosy pubs to idle in, there are a wealth of brilliant towns and villages to explore across the country waiting to be explored.”
