Pictures: Weston Air Festival delivers mesmerising show as thousands turn out in sunshine

Thousands were thrilled to see feats of aviation wizardry at the Weston Air Festival today (June 22).

The wind direction meant the balloon ascent could not go ahead this evening, yet there was enough action earlier in the day to ensure smiling faces in Weston-super-Mare.

Highlights included Spitfire and Chinook displays - as well as the appearance of a Lancaster bomber.

A message from the event's Twitter account hailed a "fantastic" first day of the festival, adding that it had featured "some of the best flying we've ever seen".

The fun began at noon when the Royal Marines Band led a march along the promenade, setting off from the Grand Pier.

After the formal opening and flag-raising ceremony, the aerial spectacle kicked off - dazzling the crowds below.

Entertainment on the ground was provided by cadet groups, display teams, and military and civilian bands.

The festival, part of the Weston Armed Forces Weekend, continues tomorrow (Sunday, June 23).
