Pictures show scale of blaze which destroyed three bin lorries but rubbish collections won't be disrupted

Refuse collections won't be disrupted in Weston-super-Mare despite three bin lorries being destroyed in a blaze, the council has said.

Crews were called to Winterstoke Road at around 3:48pm yesterday (Tuesday, September 8) and it took 25 firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the blaze.

It was initially feared the fire could cause disruption to waste collections, but the council has now said that won't be the case.

A spokesperson for North Somerset Council: "Waste collection services in North Somerset are expected to continue as normal on Wednesday despite an incident involving three waste vehicles.

"Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the Weston waste depot on Winterstoke Road after the three vehicles caught fire.

"The vehicles were empty at the time and the cause of the fire is unknown.

"No-one was injured and the council's contractors, Biffa, have secured alternative vehicles for their collection routes."

The council has previously said the vehicles were all severely damaged and would not return to service.

Three crews from Weston, two from Avonmouth, and two from Southmead attended the incident.

The fire service said in a statement: "The cause is thought to be accidental and crews returned to the scene the following morning for a reinspection with thermal imaging cameras."

The fire was extinguished at 5:49pm.
