Pictures show Leeds United are close to completing Elland Road development

Leeds United look to be applying the finishing touches to the new floodlights they have installed behind the John Charles Stand.

Leeds City Council gave the club permission to erect two 44-metre-high masts in the north-west and south-west corners of the ground in May 2019.

The permission had been sought with a view to winning promotion to the top flight and bringing Elland Road’s lighting up to the standard required by broadcasters.

Now, 18 months after permission was granted, and with Premier League football secure, work has quickened in the car parks behind the West Stand.

The masts were in place last week, but pictures surfaced on Tuesday of the bulbs and heads being attached to the tops.

United travel to Chelsea and Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but their next home match will take place at 8pm on December 11 against West Ham United.

At the time the permission was granted, the council’s chief planning officer Tim Hill said: “The proposed lighting will improve the overall quality of the existing sports grounds and will promote the long term sustainability of the football club.

“The principle of the development accords with the overall aims of the local planning authority’s core strategy.

“Furthermore, the proposal will not impact upon the amenities of the surrounding area, or give rise to any concerns regarding any impact upon highways safety or land contamination issues.

“In light of the above and with consideration being given to all other matters, it is recommended that the proposal is recommended for approval subject to conditions.”
