Pictures show flats being dropped into former Park Street nightclub in UK first

It's one of Bristol's most iconic views, but if you've taken a wander up Park Street over the past two evenings you'll have noticed a rather large obstruction in your path.

Despite the heavy rain and dark conditions, pictures from the site at 50 Park Street show a huge crane lifting units into place, shaping what will eventually become a block of nine student flats.

Although modular construction has previously been widely used in cutting-edge new builds, the site at 50 Park Street is believed to be the first in the UK where homes have been specifically constructed to slot into an existing property.

The roof of the present building, formerly a nightclub bought by Bristol developer Urban Creation last year, has been lifted entirely to allow for the flats to be neatly dropped into place.

The apartments, which are already fully decorated with kitchens and bathrooms, were built in Southampton and transported as large units by road.

Park Street has already been closed between 8pm and 5am for two nights, and initial installation of the flats should be completed tonight (August 13) - with the route becoming fully accessible once again tomorrow morning.
