Pictures show extent of damage as car wrecked after being hit by train at level crossing

Pictures have been released showing the damage to a car after it was hit by a train on a level crossing.

The driver managed to get out of the vehicle before the collision but was unable to move it to avoid the smash.

It is thought that the icy weather meant the motorist skidded on the road, ending up on the crossing, writes Essex Live.

The accident left the line closed with many trains delayed or cancelled as firefighters dealt with the aftermath.

Six crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance at the scene, including an Urban Search and Rescue team.

Incident Commander Dave Bond said: "We believe the car ended up on the level crossing after skidding on some ice. The driver was then unable to move her vehicle before the next train came through the crossing.

"Thankfully the driver escaped from her car before the train arrived, and although the train struck the car, there are no injuries to the vehicle driver, the train driver or any passengers.

"We're now working in partnership with other agencies and waiting for instructions from the Railway Incident Officer on our next steps to clear the scene and make sure it's safe.

"The road is likely to be closed for some time before the train can be moved so please avoid the area."

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service released the photographs of the car on the tracks at the crossing in Thorrington, Essex, showing that the rear was completely destroyed.

Greater Anglia train services were blocked as a result of the incident on the Clacton to London Liverpool Street line between Great Bentley and Wivenhoe.
