Pictures show devastation after 1,000 tonnes of hay catch fire in Durham barn

A barn in County Durham has suffered severe damage after 1,000 tonnes of hay caught fire.

Firefighters spotted the blaze themselves late on Tuesday as it happened on land just behind Durham Fire Station on Lanchester Road.

Pictures taken at the scene the fire shows the large amount of hay completely ablaze as crews attempt to extinguish the fire from a distance.

A spokesperson from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said on social media that there were three appliances at the scene of the blaze and the barn contained about 1,000 tonnes of hay.

They said: "Durham Green Watch were quick to raise the alarm tonight when they spotted a barn on fire to the rear of Durham Fire Station.

"Three appliances and a Targeted Response Vehicle from Durham & Spennymoor stations are currently fighting the fire which is approximately 1,000 tonnes of hay in a barn."
