Pictures show canopy over Nottingham Castle has come down as work continues

The canopy on scaffolding at Nottingham Castle has been removed as work progresses at the historic site.

The structure that has become part of the Nottingham city skyline was built as part of the £30 million transformation of the site into a "world-class heritage location".

Sections of the roof have been replaced and the scaffolding has allowed further exploration, while a waterproof membrane has meant work could continue through all weathers.

Pictures show, for the first time in a year, the exposed roof of the castle now that the canopy has gone.

The castle closed its doors in summer 2018 for the project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the D2N2 local enterprise partnership, Nottingham Castle Trust and Nottingham City Council.

Work is being led by G F Tomlinson and is on schedule to be completed by 2021.

Councillor Dave Trimble, city council portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “The impressive scaffold wrapping the castle for the last 12 months has become something of a landmark on the Nottingham skyline.

"Now works are nearing completion on the roof, people will definitely notice the scaffold slowly disappearing, marking a significant step towards finishing the transformation of the castle as we move towards re-opening next year.”
