Pictures show burnt-out wreck of car after fire which caused traffic jam on M4

One driver had a lucky escape on the M4 when their car burst into flames.

The driver managed to pull over to the hard shoulder of the eastbound carriageway, but the fire left their car burnt out before fire crews arrived.

The blaze broke out at just before 10am this morning (August 26) on the eastbound carriageway, around four miles east of junction 19 for the M32.

Firefighters from Temple Fire Station rushed to the scene and put out the fire.

Highways England officers and police closed down two lanes of the M4, allowing traffic to squeeze past in Lane 3.

But the hold-up led to an eight-mile traffic jam, which went back beyond the M32 junction and almost to the Almondsbury interchange with the M5.

Temple Fire Station firefighters tweeted their sympathy with the driver of the car.

"(A) busy start to the week for GreenWatch," a spokesperson for the fire station said.

"We hope you've enjoyed your Bank Holiday break more than this poor driver today on the M4," he added.
