Pictures show 25 tonnes of rubbish left dumped in Filton lane

Around 25 tonnes of rubbish has been cleared from a lane behind Filton Abbey Wood railway station.

South Gloucestershire Council’s street cleansing team carried out a “one-off clearance” of Nutfield Grove in Filton, which had become a dumping ground for people’s unwanted items.

The authority was called in to clear the lane last week, after residents had gated it off in order to prevent fly-tipping.

A post on the council’s Streetcare Facebook page reported around 25 tonnes of rubbish had been cleared from the lane - including tyres, mattresses, fridges, litter and bags of waste.

The team also published before and after pictures of the lane - which showed it had become completely inaccessible.

South Gloucestershire Council has been cracking down on those who fly-tip within the district with a number of offenders being prosecuted in the courts.

Rachael Hunt , cabinet member for communities, said: “Fly-tipping is completely unacceptable and we will be relentless in our attempts to identify and prosecute individuals who break the law in this manner.

“Our zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping in South Gloucestershire means that anyone who fly-tips here is up to five times more likely to be prosecuted than anywhere else in the country.

"We want people to realise that fly-tipping really isn’t worth the risk and to dispose of their waste in a responsible manner.

“I encourage anyone who sees illegal fly tipping to report it."

Residents and businesses are advised to only give their rubbish to an Environment Agency registered waste carrier.

Contractors should ensure they hold a Registered Waste Carriers Licence and they comply with the Waste Transfer Note requirements.

Do not be tempted to use people offering cheap waste clearance on sites such as Facebook and Gumtree unless you have confirmed that they are registered with the Environment Agency.

Check whether the waste carrier is registered by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 or by checking on their website.

Ask for a registered trading address and contact telephone number for the trader and get a receipt.

And avoid cash in hand offers and cold callers offering to remove waste.
