Pictures of deserted high streets show lockdown working in West Yorkshire

Police have captured the silent and deserted streets of West Yorkshire amid the current coronavirus lockdown.

Pictures of empty high streets in Leeds and Wakefield show that the majority of residents are continuing to follow government advice and stay at home - despite the glorious weather.

In a post on social media West Yorkshire Police thanked the public for abiding by social distancing rules.

"Thanks West Yorkshire for helping to save lives, by following Government advice and staying at home," reads the tweet.

"Your support is really appreciated #Covid19 #StayHomeSaveLives."

It remains unclear how long lockdown will last and when social distancing rules will be relaxed.

When asked about it in today's press conference, chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “Rather than speculate about the future, I think we should focus very seriously on the here and now and the present.

“Our priority right now is to stop the spread of this virus, to get to the other side of the peak and the best way to do that is for people to follow the advice which is to stay at home, protect lives and protect the NHS.”
