Pictures of Alun Wyn Jones taking contact in training emerge as he looks set to join up with the Lions in South Africa

Alun Wyn Jones looks set to make a stunning return to the Lions squad after pictures emerged of him training with Wales on Tuesday.

The tour captain suffered a dislocated shoulder in the pre-trip warm-up against Japan on June 26 and it was feared that his tour was over.

Jones did not travel with the side but head coach Warren Gatland quickly let on that the outlook for Jones was not as bleak as first feared.

On Monday, Gatland then revealed that Jones had linked up to train with Wales as they prepare to face Argentina this weekend.

Tuesday was earmarked as a key day and Jones was facing a double session with Wayne Pivac's side. How he came through that double session will determine whether he is fit enough to join the Lions in South Africa.

A decision was expected to be made on Jones on Tuesday, though the suspicion is nothing will be made public until Wednesday (July 14).

But given that pictures have been released of Jones in training with Wales, including one of him tackling Nick Tompkins with the shoulder he dislocated just over two weeks ago, it would seem to be good news.

When asked about the chances of Jones re-joining the Lions, Gatland said at a press conference on Monday: "There's a possibility.

"He's back in training and we're waiting for the medical reports from him to see what happens with that.

"A few weeks ago, we didn't think it was an option.

"He's been back fully training with Wales. He's training this week with them and he's doing a double session with them [on Tuesday].

"We'll see what the outcome of that is.

"He's made a remarkable recovery. The assessment initially was that it wasn't as bad as they first thought but that's a real positive.

"It would be a boost to this squad, having someone of his experience and calibre to come back into the squad."

If Jones is going to feature in the first Test against the Springboks on July 24, you would have thought he'd have to feature for the tourists against the Stormers this Saturday.
