Pictures: long-term West Ham injury victim makes first team training return after eight months

West Ham summer recruit Carlos Sanchez has had his season decimated by a serious knee injury but he has been pictured back on the training pitch for the first time since September.

The summer signing from Fiorentina damaged knee ligaments just ten minutes into the Carabao Cup tie against Macclesfield Town back on September 29, just his third start for the Hammers since joining the club.

After undergoing surgery, it's been a long road to recovery for the Colombian international and while it is still early days, manager Manuel Pellegrini revealed last week that the defensive midfielder could feature before the end of the season.

The club posted a video of Sanchez back in training on their Instagram account on Thursday morning but the midfielder himself has also taken to social media to show us his comeback, which you can see below.

The player posted a simple "Happy to be back after my knee injury" message to accompany his post.

The 33-year-old midfielder penned a two-year contract from Fiorentina in August and has appeared at five major tournaments for his country, including two FIFA World Cup finals.

Sanchez was brought in to act as cover for Declan Rice but after the youngster was hauled off at half time during the first game of the season at Liverpool, Sanchez started games against Arsenal and Wolves in the Englishman's place.

The Wolves game will stick in the mind of Hammers fans as it was Sanchez who dallied on the ball, had it nicked off him by Adama Traore who would go on to slot home a 90th minute winner for Nuno Espirito Santo's men.
