Pictures emerge of Sports Direct signs being removed from Newcastle United's St James' Park home

The Sports Direct signs at St James' Park are coming down - and some have been spotted in a skip at St James' Park.

The giant letters of Mike Ashley's sportswear company have begun to be removed from underneath the big screen at the Leazes End of the ground, while the plastic banners that were placed around the stadium at the top of the stands have also been taken down.

Work will be continuing to remove the Sports Direct lettering from either side of 'Newcastle United' that can be seen on the East Stand - with speculation that in time, the club may also revert to the old font type when it comes to that sign.

There is also the matter of the signs around the exit of the pitch tunnel.

Pictures of the work taking place appeared on social media with the blue and red lettering of Sports Direct piled up at the bottom of one of the stairwells - with some of the smaller labellings has been placed in a skip.

It marks the end of Newcastle United's association with Sports Direct and Ashley who sold the club to a Saudi-backed consortium in October.

The retail tycoon had used the stadium as a way to advertise his company and even went as far as to rename the stadium The Sports Direct Arena back in 2011.

The new owners had always planned to remove the signage and with the next home game, against Man City, not until 19th December, the decision was taken to do so before another 52,000 flocked through the gates.

As expected, the reaction from fans has been one of celebration with one fan on Twitter simply writing: 'things you love to see.'
