Pictured: Manchester air raid shelters where families took cover during the 1940 Christmas Blitz

These are the air raid shelters where families in Manchester spent two terrifying nights during Nazi bombing raids in the run-up to Christmas in 1940.

More than 800 civilians were killed in the two nights of bombing which started on December 22, 1940 and ran into the early hours of Christmas Eve.

A series of pictures held by the Manchester Local Image Collection at Manchester City Council show where children and families were forced to hide from the bombardment.
