Christian Pulisic finally made his Chelsea debut on Friday as the Blues lost 1-0 against Kawasaki Frontale in Japan.
The 20-year-old signed on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge at the start of January but he finished the 2018/19 campaign on loan at former club Borussia Dortmund.
Pulisic did spend a few days in the capital following the end of the Bundesliga season, yet he was away again as he represented the United States in the Gold Cup.
That meant he missed the first week of pre-season training as the team flew out to Ireland for friendlies against Bohemians and St Patrick's Athletic.
Rather than taking a short break after his participation in the Gold Cup like the vast majority of his international teammates have done, the attacker elected to return to Chelsea early as he aims to make a big impression on new head coach Frank Lampard.
The boss resisted the temptation of throwing the player straight into the team against the J League side in Yokohama, instead introducing him in place of Mason Mount with 25 minutes remaining on the clock.
Pulisic gave fans a glimpse of his qualities during his short time on the pitch as he troubled Kawasaki Frontale's defence with his quick feet and trickery.
Chelsea are next in action on Tuesday against Barcelona and the new signing will be hoping to be handed his first start for the game in Saitama.
