Picture shows Sainsbury's recycling bank overwhelmed by bottles and beer cans

A recycling bank at a Nottinghamshire supermarket has been overwhelmed by wine bottles and beer cans.

Sainsbury's has since apologised for the mess which was left at the bottle bank on the grounds of its superstore in Nottingham Road, Mansfield on July 14.

Pictures show hundreds of bottles, glass containers, bags and cans left on the floor by the recycling banks after they became full.

A complaint was lodged with Mansfield District Council, which deemed the emptying of the bottle banks the responsibility of Sainsbury's.

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We’re working to clear the area as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Bottle banks across the county were previously seen overflowing, including a site at Woodthorpe Grange, near Sherwood.

Some glass collections had been paused amid the pandemic due to staffing shortages, particularly in the Gedling borough.

Some councils had advised residents to store glass bottles and cans somewhere safe until they can be collected, rather than leaving them on the floor by the recycling units.

Tips across the county have also been reopened after an increase in fly-tipping incidents during lockdown.
