Picture shows major changes to 'mini Paris' street transformation in Leeds city centre

Works to transform one of Leeds city centre's liveliest streets are nearing completion.

Bars and restaurants line both sides of Greek Street, which is normally rammed full of customers on a Saturday afternoon.

Teams of construction workers began making changes to the road, off Park Row, earlier this year and now the image above has been shared to show how it currently looks.

It was initially due to be completed this month, but the Covid-19 pandemic means that the pedestrianisation won't be finished until July.

Further proposals were also put forward last month to make additional changes, including increasing the wideness of its central walkway and creating barriers to better allow existing businesses to include seating in the street.

It would mean the bars and restaurants could full maximise their outdoor space and embrace a Parisian-style café culture.

A Leeds City Council document said the changes would add "vitality and attractiveness" to the area.

The report states: "The pedestrianisation of Greek Street contributes positively towards supporting growth, investment and businesses and by contributing to improved air quality through the removal of most traffic.

"Street cafés aim to improve vitality and attractiveness of the city centre and contribute to the best council plan.

"The intention is that this masterplan will be used as a guide, and individual businesses will apply for street cafés in the normal way.

"The overall layout plan is not fully prescriptive. It only offers a guide to businesses on the maximum extent of their areas, and it is up to them to apply for street cafés which adhere to the normal licensing rules, but which comply with the maximum dimensions stipulated."

The scheme has been approved by council officers, but individual street café applications are set to be submitted as normal.
