Picture shows aftermath of M1 crash near East Midlands Airport

A large number of emergency services were called to the scene of a three-car crash on the M1.

A woman had to be cut free from a vehicle after the three-car smash on the M1 on Saturday (March 13) afternoon.

The crash happened near to East Midlands Airport shortly after 3pm on the northbound carriageway of the motorway.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were at the scene, Leicestershire Live reports.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said in their report that they were called by East Midlands Ambulance Service at 3.10pm and arrived to help the woman out of one of the vehicles. They remain at the location and one lane is shut.

Traffic appeared to be coping well in the area.
