There was only one person in the car at the time of the crash and they have been taken to hospital by land ambulance where they continue to be assessed.

Alongside a photo posted on Twitter, North West Motorway Police said: "Just the driver on board who has survived & taken to hospital with injuries."

The North West Motorway Police suggested that the crash was caused by 'a combination of poor driving and wet weather'.

All traffic on the eastbound traffic continues to be held, with queues snaking back for almost 10 miles.

Only two lanes are open on the eastbound carriageway as contractors continue to carry out essential repairs works as the site of the incident.
