Picture captures at least a dozen planes grounded at Bristol Airport with no scheduled departures today

This was the scene at Bristol Airport with not a single scheduled flight departing today (March 31), after the coronavirus pandemic left dozens of planes grounded with 'nowhere to go'.

Airline easyJet yesterday announced that it had grounded its entire fleet of aircraft due to the ongoing crisis.

The airline, which has an office in Bristol, said parking all 344 of its planes “removes significant cost” as the aviation industry continues to struggle amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Such measures mean there's no scheduled departing flights leaving Bristol Airport today. A picture, taken by John Bevir, shows commercial planes lined up on the tarmac at the airport.

Mr Bevir wrote on Twitter: "One commercial passenger flight took off from #BristolAirport yesterday.

"Today, there are none scheduled. Remarkable. Planes lined up with no crew and nowhere to go."

A spokeswoman for Bristol Airport said it remains operational to assist with essential flights.

She said: "Bristol Airport is operational to assist with repatriation, medical, military and other essential flights.

"We continue to work closely with airlines, the government, Department for Transport and Public Health England on the latest information and guidance for customers.

"Safety and security of our customers and staff is our key priority at all times and enhanced cleaning procedures and self-distancing policies are in place to keep our customers and colleagues safe, whilst providing these vital air links."
